History of the Italian Cultural Society of Naples, FL |
| Origins The Italian Cultural Society of Naples, founded in 1998 was born from a shared vision of an organization dedicated to celebrating and sharing Italy’s culture in all of its aspects. Joseph Delfino and Edith Coleman, both Italophiles, felt that despite the general appreciation for Italian heritage, there was an apparent lack of knowledge in the Naples community, of the many aspects of Italian culture. Additionally, opportunities to explore Italy’s cultural richness and diversity were very limited. Believing the Naples community would benefit from exposure to Italian culture, Delfino led the initiative by starting an Italian language program which received an immediate positive response. After lengthy discussions, Delfino and Coleman concluded that an organization was needed to move their ideas forward and successfully. Together they reached out to the Naples community, to share their enthusiasm. They invited Nicholas Di Russo and Corinne Dunne to join them in this endeavor. These four Co-founders invited friends and associates to join them in pursuit of their dream. |
The initial group included Ron Diorio, John Iaizzo, Luciana Haynes, Alessandra Higgs, Liana Buysse and Fiora Massey, who later formed the Founding Advisory Board, with Delfino as President, Dunne as Vice President, Coleman as Treasurer and Di Russo as Secretary. The first Luncheon/Meeting was attended by 35 interested people, encouraging the Founders to declare its Mission and write its By-Laws. The Italian Cultural Society was formally incorporated in 2001.
